In a retelling of the Danish legend "The Sunken Mansion," the narrator dreams himself a medieval priest summoned to give the last rites to a mortally injured baron (only to find himself subject to a blasphemous prank).

First published in the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine, September 1856. In the magazine, this story has the note "See Thorpe's 'Northern Mythology,' vol. ii. p. 214."
