A woman hosting a Christmas gathering at her English country house juggles many visitors: an American couple (the husband wants to see ghosts and brings his spirit-photography equipment), an old family friend who's a fussy bachelor, and a very rude ex-actress who comes uninvited bringing her protegé, an avant-garde flautist. Luckily they all eventually get along very well, especially after one night when the American ghost-hunter believes he's found what he's looking for.
A comic story. The ghost-hunter in it sees no actual ghosts, but his hostess tells him that he's not looking in the right place and that she has a ghost in her kitchen (this ghost doesn't actually appear in the story). First published in the Tatler, 8 November 1954.
