Fairies at the Christening

Elizabeth Bowen

First published June 2008
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

At the christening of her first child, which is to take place on Christmas eve, a new mother realizes that she's promised friends they would be a godmother about 15 times over the years. She decides to leave it up to Fate which promises she keeps, and draws three names from a hat. One of them is someone she doesn't really want to see again.

A speculative story: the three godmothers are actually magical as well as having a mundane existence. An unpublished story from manuscript, probably written in the 1950s.
