Originally an unsold Conan story titled "The Black Stranger", it was rewritten as a Black Vulmea pirate tale which remained unsold and unpublished until 1976. Howard's original story was rewritten by L. Sprague de Camp and published as "The Black Stranger" in 1953, and soon afterward as "The Treasure of Tranicos" in the Gnome Press collection KING CONAN (1953).
