Per Peter Haining's introduction to this story in The Wild Night Company: "Much of [Lady Jane's] life was devoted to collecting Irish folk tales and legends and these she published in numerous collections, the most notable being Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland. From this book I have taken three accounts of the most prevalent of all Irish fantasy figures ...." The story is composed of three sections titled "The Horned Woman", "The Fairy Race", and "The Leprechauns".
