Six Hypotheses

Joyce Carol Oates

First published June 2004
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

The full title of this story as it appears in the book (both on the page where the story starts and in the table of contents) starts with a mysterious-looking presumably-hand-drawn illegible squiggle, about five letters wide and about the height of a capital letter, followed by a colon, like this: "[squiggle]: Six Hypotheses". The squiggle also appears in the story, as if it were a word; for example, the phrase "the [squiggle] contagion" appears several times in the story.
