The Dutch Officer's Story

Catherine Crowe

First published 1859
Type Short Fiction
Length Short Story

In the 1859 edition, Second Part: Legends of the Earthbound, this chapter (pp. 209-27, viewed at HathiTrust) begins with six paragraphs that introduce its telling by "the General", or the Dutch Officer of the title, beginning with a quotation of the Dutch Officer's wife, Madame de B., whose purpose is to evoke its telling from her husband in the presence of Mrs. Crowe, "seeker of ghost stories". The story proper is printed in quotation marks throughout, with all dialogue in two sets of quotation marks.   The same is true of its publication in the 1898 anthology (and the 1981 Castle Books reprint), but some publications may differ.
