First published in The Conservative, October 1916, as by Elizabeth Berkley. This was the pseudonym of Lovecraft's occasional collaborator Winifred V. Jackson; Lovecraft commented in a 1923 letter that he had used Jackson's pseudonym "in an effort to mystify the [amateur] public by having widely dissimilar work from the same nominal hand." Information from The Lovecraft Encyclopedia.
