This translation begins:
"Ladies and Gentlemen,
Will you permit me to neglect all the duties of a Director of the Academy of Amiens presiding at a public session, by replacing the usual lecture by an account of an adventure which happened to myself?"
In The Eternal Adam and Other Stories the story is subtitled "A public lecture delivered by Jules Verne, Director, on 12th December 1875." The contents of the story are nevertheless fiction.
