"Bernie's Aunt Sheila, whom she and her sister Michelle are visiting, has a row of old dolls on a shelf in the room they are staying in. Bernie is terrified to find out that the eyes of one of the dolls glow and move in the dark like real eyes. Her sister doesn't believe her, since the doll appears ordinary in the daytime. Then Aunt Sheila tells Bernie a story from long ago that begins to unravel the mystery of the glowing eyes." (author's summary)
