Peter Goldthwaite, having ruined himself with bad business decisions, refuses to sell his house (now prime urban real estate), and instead guts it floor by floor looking for a chest of gold he believes an ancestor hid there.
Speculative elements: hints of a ghost. First published (as by "the author of Twice-Told Tales") in The Token and Atlantic Souvenir in 1838.
