Poet, journalist, editor, and short-story writer. Influential in the development of the short story form in America. Aldrich served as a junior literary critic for the New York Evening Mirror, sub-editor of the Home Journal, and war correspondent for the New-York Tribune during the Civil War. He edited the New York Illustrated News, the Boston literary magazine Every Saturday (1865 to 1874), and The Atlantic Monthly (1881 to 1890).
