A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop (class of 2012), Carmen currently lives in Philadelphia with her wife. In 2012, she attended Clarion Workshop. As of 2019, she teaches creative writing (fiction and CNF) and speculative fiction at the University of Pennsylvania. A 2019 Guggenheim fellow (fiction). Her paternal grandfather was an immigrant from Cuba.
In Dec2019 her comic series THE LOW, LOW WOODS (6 books\collected) started - from DC Comics' Black Label imprint Joe Hill Presents/Hill House Comics.
