Born in Croydon, Surrey, which officially became a borough of London in 1964. Regarding Clarke's name and various pseudonyms, Rob Hansen states :
"Clarke never used his first name Aubrey, or indeed let people know what it was (hence speculation at one point that it must be Arthur) ... Professionally he used A. V. Clarke, and fannishly A. Vincent Clarke at first, then Vin¢ (cent sign) Clarke."
The pseudonym "Inquisitor" was an open secret in contemporary fandom at the time, as is stated in the non-fiction collection ''A Vince Clarke Treasury'' (Ansible Editions, 2015) which incorporates all the 'Inquisitor' articles.
