  • Contents from Dover reprint and Project Gutenberg.
  • Two Pushtoo (Pashto) tales from Major Campbell, Feroshepore (Firozpur), Punjab, India.
  • Three tales from Zacharias Topelius translated from the Swedish by Miss Harding.
  • The Sea King's Gift, also from Topelius, translated by Miss Christie.
  • All other translations(French, Portuguese, etc.) by Mrs.(Leonora) Lang.
Of the stories with no credited author:
  • Six are from J.F. Campbell's collection Popular Tales of the West Highlands (though some take place in Ireland).
  • The False Prince and the True is from Teofilo Braga's collection Contos Tradicionaes do Povo Portuguez.
  • The Rich Brother and the Poor Brother is 'from the Portuguese'
  • A Fish Story is from an Australian tale collected by R. H. Mathews and published in the journal Folk-Lore, Vol. XIX (1908).
  • The Wonderful Tune is from T. Crofton Croker's collection Fairy Tales & Traditions of the South of Ireland.
  • Three tales are from Lady Guest's translation of The Mabingion.
  • The Brown Bear of Norway and The Three Crowns are wrongly attributed to Campbell's Popular Tales. They are actually from Patrick Kennedy's collection Legendary Fictions of the Irish Celts.
  • The Bones of Djulung is wrongly attributed to A. F. Mackenzie. It is a tale from the Macassar tribe of Celebes (Sulawesi), Indonesia translated by A.F. Chamberlain and published in the article A Macassar Cinderella in the journal Folk-Lore Vol. XIX (1908).
