Originally published in Italy, in Italian, as two separate volumes: "Racconti Fantisastici Dell'Ottocento: Volume Primo, Il Fantastico Visionari" and "Volume Secundo, Il Fantastico Quotidiano", by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore 1983. Alfred MacAdam translated Calvino's introduction and comments as well as the following stories: "Autumn Sorcery" by Joseph von Eichendorf, "The Eye with No Lid" by Philarete Chasles, "The Enchanted Hand" by Gerald de Nerval, and "The Holes in the Mask" by Jean Lorrain. Headnote dates and Introduction date are given the translation copyright date of 1997 as per the Copyright page in the book. The table of contents lists the pages that the head-notes start on, the stories start up to several pages later and are not listed separately on the contents page.
