Mary Shelley

First published 1976
Type Short Fiction
Length Novelette

• First published late 1837 in The Keepsake for MDCCCXXXVIII (The Keepsake), pp. 128-55, as uncredited (viewed at Google Books) • Published as "The Pilgrims: A Tale of Chivalry" in The Snow-Flake: A Christmas, New-Year, and Birthday Gift, for MDCCCLII (Phila.: E. H. Butler & Co., 1852), pp. 49-87, uncredited

Attribution. No external evidence for the attribution to Shelley is known. 1891 editor Garnett possibly made a reasonable guess. "Nevertheless, on Garnett's authority the present editor includes 'The Pilgrims' in this collection." --Charles E. Robinson, 1976 collection "Notes", XX, p. 393 (viewed at Amazon)

The Keepsake for MDCCCXXXVIII, like the original ten years earlier, was published anonymously; the editor, writers, and artists all uncredited (none as "Anon.", etc). "ADVERTISEMENT", p[iii], begins: "The Proprietor having ascertained that a belief exists that the articles for the Keepsake have occasionally been selected less in relation to their intrinsic merits, than to the names of their authors, has determined to escape the imputation, by publishing the work anonymously."
